Legend has it that one especially daring young pilot flew his aircraft so low that his landing gear crushed an onlooker’s top hat. “Flat Hatting” soon became the term used to describe the unauthorized, not quite by-the-book, flying that almost every pilot engaged in. Sure it often resulted in the pilot being reprimanded or ‘put in hack’, but that kind of boldness can’t be grounded.
